At Sea… Cruising the Baltic Sea

What an interesting day! Sailing the high seas on historic waterways… ones I have not explored before now.

Nestled between Central and Northern Europe, the Baltic Sea is one of the world’s most historic waterways. From the moment humankind took to the waters in the first seafaring vessels, tribes and civilizations clamored to lay claim to these waters.

During the Middle Ages, heated maritime battles unfolded on this watery stage between Norse Vikings and the Wendish tribes from the southern coast. From Poland to Prussia, from Slavic pirates to the Teutonic Order, military leaders throughout history knew that by commanding the Baltic Sea, they could rule all of northern Europe. Today, such dreams of conquest have fallen to history; the Baltic’s allure is in its shimmering waters and the stately cities that overlook its shores.

Aside from the beautiful views from every deck today, we had a packed day with lectures. This was the single best (and most packed) day of lectures thus far. So, without further ado… here is a little of what I was able to take in today!

“Imperial Russia”

This was led by Viking Resident Historian, Colonel (Ret) Bart Howard. We discovered the world of the Romanov rulers between the 17th-19th centuries.

“Tallinn, Estonia- A Port Talk”

Led by Cruise Director, Drew Raitch. We learned more about the heritage, culture and history of this uniquely positioned city. This also provided a fantastic overview of the historic sites to be encountered soon.

“Matryoshka- The Nesting Doll”

Led by Viking Resident Expert Cristian. He revealed how this simple toy became one of Russia’s most beloved cultural icons. Fast Fact: This form of art originated in Japan!

“Rasputin- The Russian Mystic (Part 1)"

Led by BBC4 broadcaster and Viking Enrichment Lecturer Ernest Rea. It was a journey of discovering how an obscure Russian peasant from Siberia gained powerful influence over the Russian royal family. Let me tell you folks… it was a cliff hanger that included intrigue, religion, sex, and more. I can’t wait to hear part two!

“Estonia- The Little Country that Could”

Led by Viking Enrichment Lecturer Tiiu Lukk. History came alive as Ms. Lukk interwove her own family roots in Estonia. Even describing how historical family lands were regained during its independence and how her family’s next generation is contributing to the prosperity and communications recognition of this little nation with a big heart.

After taking in so much interesting and educational information today… nothing could end the day better than these scenes of a Baltic sunset.

Until next time,

Kari
